Velo Academy: traffic education for bicycle riders

Mures Community Foundation together with the Green Szeklerland Association of Miercurea Ciuc and Community Foundation on Odorheiu Secuiesc are launching a program of traffic education for bicycle riders that will last a year to promote safety on the roads.

The aim of the program Velo Academy is to raise the number of those choosing to use the bicycle in their everyday mobility to contribute to the reduction of both air and phonic pollution.

Through an educational program 150 young people (aged 14-18) will learn about rules of traffic and the dangers that can be met by those using a bicycle. The educational program is based on written material about bicycle riding and safety measures, but also includes technical information. Participants will test their skills on a specially equipped testing track.

Besides educational activities the program also includes an awareness campaign scheduled in April (during Critical Mass campaign) and September (during the Week of European Mobility).

The Initiators of the project will organize protest marches on bicycle and distribute flyers to draw the attention of both bicyclists and car drivers on the benefits of bicycle riding and its dangers in the traffic.

The program is launched with the collaboration of three cities and the help of Switzerland through the Swiss contribution to Extended European Union.

The grant is of 56.086,75 CHF from the total budget of 62.318,75 CHF intended for the project.
